Ancient Greece was a place and an era flourished with culture, rich mythology, and remarkable architectural achievements… so remarkable in fact that it had a considerable influence on modern day architecture.

Many important architectural elements that we use now in this era have been inspired by Greek architecture, such as columns, pediments, and symmetrical designs.

Ancient Greek architecture stood out from other architectural works around the world in its time because it deeply emphasized harmony, balance, and proportion. And it also introduced unique architectural features such as the use of marble.

Ancient Greek architecture truly stood out from other architectural works around the world in its time. The ancient Greeks were pioneers in creating structures that highlighted a harmonious blend of beauty, functionality, and mathematical precision.

The Greek architectural achievements such as the Parthenon and the Temple of Artemis, were characterized by the iconic use of Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders, intricate friezes, and perfectly proportioned columns. The Greeks also introduced the concept of the “golden ratio” that influenced the balance and aesthetics of their buildings. Their architectural proficiency and diligence set a standard that continues to inspire and influence architectural design to this day.

The ancient Greeks gave attention to the beauty and details of their architectural designs and the facades of their buildings and temples, which begs the question:

Is the outer beauty of a building really that important?

I strongly believe that adding beauty to a building’s facade is not only a matter of aesthetic and making it look visually pleasing, but it also adds to the symbolism of the building, creating a positive image to the surrounding area, and benefiting businesses by attracting potential occupants/customers/visitors.

Learning from ancient architectural features from all over the world could be a great advantage to us, because not only does it teach us about our human ancestors, but it also broadens or perspective and inspires creativity by exploring us to unique design elements, construction techniques, and artistic expressions.
